The Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework effective since September 2025 introduced new requirements and updates to ensure high standards in early years education and care.
Key Updates in the 2025 Framework
- Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements: The 2025 framework includes strengthened safeguarding requirements, emphasizing the importance of child safety and well-being. New nutrition guidance has also been developed to ensure that meals and snacks provided are healthy, balanced, and nutritious.
- Learning and Development Requirements: The framework outlines the standards that all early years providers must meet to support children's learning and development effectively. This includes updated guidance on assessment and the qualifications required for staff.
- Changes to Staff Ratios: The updated framework clarifies the staff-to-child ratios and includes provisions for staff who have successfully completed specific training to be counted in these ratios.
- Framework Structure: The EYFS framework is divided into two documents: one for childminders and another for group and school-based providers. This separation helps tailor the requirements to different types of early years settings.
- Implementation Timeline: The new framework will be effective from September 1, 2025, and all early years providers must ensure compliance with the updated standards by this date.
